A getaway does not have to come with a full-price itinerary. FREE hotel rewards memberships, museum admission programs, and birthday treats can help you get more from a trip you were already planning.
Some travel credit cards offer valuable benefits too, but those perks may come with an annual fee or spending requirements. Here’s how to find the offers that fit your trip.
Confirm program availability and terms before you travel.
Join hotel rewards programs before you book
Joining a hotel loyalty program is generally FREE. Even a basic membership can unlock benefits on a paid stay:
- Marriott Bonvoy: Basic members can access member rates and complimentary in-room Wi-Fi at participating hotels. Book through Marriott’s website or app to access eligible rates. Member Rates, FREE Wi-Fi …
- Hilton Honors: Members can access a discount rate, earn points toward future rewards, and receive FREE Wi-Fi where the program terms apply.
- World of Hyatt: Members can earn points on qualifying stays and work toward additional benefits as they reach higher membership tiers. Check the benefits for your current tier before counting on an upgrade or late checkout.
Savings tip: Compare the final room price—including taxes and property fees—with other booking options. A “member rate” is useful when it saves you money on the stay you actually want.
Use travel points for a future trip
Hotel and rail rewards can turn eligible paid travel into points toward later redemptions. For example, Hilton Honors members can earn points toward reward nights, while the FREE Amtrak Guest Rewards program lets members earn points on qualifying train travel. Reward availability and redemption requirements vary.
Keep your membership numbers in one place and add the right number before each booking. If you travel with family, check whose account should receive the points.
Consider card benefits only if the math works
A travel credit card may include checked bags, hotel status, points, or other perks. The card itself is not automatically a freebie: compare its annual fee, eligibility rules, and required spending with the benefits you would actually use.
For example, the United Explorer Card advertises a first checked bag benefit and other travel perks, but United lists a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150. The checked bag benefit also has purchase requirements in its terms.
For a hotel example, the Hilton Honors American Express Card advertises no annual fee. It is still a credit card, so review the current benefits and terms before applying.
Quick test: Would you use the benefit on trips you already expect to take? If you have to book extra travel or spend more just to earn a reward, it may not save you money.
Find FREE or reduced museum admission
Museums can be one of the easiest ways to add a memorable stop to your itinerary without paying full admission.
Bank of America Museums on Us
Eligible Bank of America, Merrill, and Bank of America Private Bank cardholders can receive one FREE general admission to a participating institution during the first full weekend of each month. Check the Museums on Us location map, along with the venue’s admission procedures, before visiting. Special exhibitions or additional guests may have separate charges.
Museums for All
If you receive SNAP benefits, Museums for All offers FREE to $5 admission at participating museums for up to four people per EBT card. Participating museums accept SNAP EBT cards from other states, making this useful while traveling. Bring the required card and identification, and check the individual museum’s price.
Smithsonian museums
Planning a Washington, D.C., trip? Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo offer FREE admission; the Cooper Hewitt museum in New York City is an exception. Some locations or experiences may require a timed-entry reservation, so check before arriving.
Also check your library: Some public libraries offer reservable museum passes. Availability is local; New York City’s Culture Pass is one example for eligible library cardholders.
Add birthday FREEbies to a birthday trip
Traveling around your birthday? Sign up for rewards programs before you leave, add your birth date, and check each offer’s redemption window. These stops can add a treat to a road trip or city break:
- Dutch Bros: Its app adds a FREE birthday drink reward, valid for 30 days.
- Starbucks Rewards: Eligible members can receive a birthday reward. Check the current enrollment, purchase, and redemption requirements for your membership level.
- Sephora Beauty Insider: Members can choose a birthday gift during their birthday month, subject to availability. Sephora says in-store redemption is FREE; online redemption has a $25 minimum purchase.
Map out locations along your route, but check the reward in your account before making a special trip. Store participation and gift availability can vary.
Build a low-cost travel day
Start with a hotel member rate if you need a room. Add a FREE museum or a timed visit to a participating Museums on Us location. If your birthday falls near the trip, check your rewards apps for a drink or gift you can pick up along the way.
